CaviPRO Induction School at UL: 23rd-27th September 2024

The CaviPRO project started on 1st February 2024. The first network-wide event in the form of ‘Induction School’ was organized at the University of Limerick (UL) from 23rd to 27th September 2024. The program was designed to introduce newly recruited doctoral candidates (DCs), principal investigators hosting these DCs, and associate partners of the CaviPRO project to each other as well as to the objectives and structure of the CaviPRO project. The school included technical sessions on hydrodynamic cavitation, dissemination practices, team-building activities, and visits to key facilities like the Bernal Institute and Biocore. It provided a platform for the participants to engage in discussions, presentations, and collaborative activities aimed at fostering research and professional development. It also provided an opportunity to discuss overall working practices for the CaviPRO team.

Day 1: Monday, 23rd September 2024

The day started with an introductory session led by Vivek V. Ranade, who welcomed the participants and introduced the CaviPRO project, along with a detailed agenda for the induction school. DCs and partners introduced themselves and shared information about their research groups and roles within the project.

The afternoon session focused on Work Packages (WPs) and the supervision process, career development plans, and mobility of DCs. The day concluded with parallel sessions, one for the DCs and another for the CaviPRO partners, including the DC hosts and associate partners. During one of the parallel sessions dedicated to DCs, Subhrajit Swain, DC5 from the University of Limerick, was elected as the representative of the DCs. The session also saw the operationalization of the CaviPRO website, which now contains all pending details from the DCs, hosts, and partners. Subhrajit has been entrusted with handling the website management as part of his responsibilities within the WP1.

In the evening, participants were treated to a guided tour of the UL campus, offering an opportunity to network in a more informal setting.

Day 2: Tuesday, 24th September 2024

The second day was dedicated to technical talks by all the PIs of the CaviPRO team. It began with an overview of the current state of the art on hydrodynamic cavitation by Vivek, which was followed by talks on single bubble physics (Outi), cavitation-induced wear (Matevz), and tomographic imaging of multiphase flows (Markus). In the afternoon, technical sessions were dedicated to intensifying chemical reactions using cavitation (Giancarlo) and modelling multiphase flows (Wei and Bojan). Every talk was followed by an interesting discussion. The talk by Bojan also led to a discussion on characteristic sizes of ‘control volume’ used for deriving model equations and of ‘mesh’ used for the numerical solution of the model equations. Further discussion on this point will be continued in the coming weeks. The evening ended with a formal dinner at a restaurant in Limerick City, where participants had the chance to interact further.

Day 3: Wednesday, 25th September 2024

The day featured sessions on research dissemination, research integrity, and doctoral research planning. Participants gained valuable insights into authorship, publication practices, and intellectual property (IP) exploitation. The afternoon saw an interactive team-building session led by Klara and Subhrajit, followed by group discussions on translating CaviPRO research from the lab to practice. During this session, Markus Schubert proposed the promotion of CaviPRO on professional platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter. Subhrajit took on the responsibility of social media management, integrating this into his tasks within WP1. The day ended with dinner at the Pavilion, UL, providing an opportunity for informal conversations and bonding.
